'Big three' losing power? - Music News Research

Since the current music industry began in the middle of the 20th century, the market has been dominated by three companies
  • Universal Music Group
  • Sony Music Entertainment
  • Warner Music Group
However, as the industry continues developing, things are changing in the power balance of record labels. With the charts being invaded with unsigned artists such as Rizzle Kicks, the need for an artist to sign on the dotted line is decreasing.

Since 2011, internet vlogger Alex Day has had 3 UK top 40 singles, one which reached #4, all without a label or even a manager. He used his links and large audience on youtube to generate publicity, which sparks questions of whether being signed is really the best way for artists to get their music out there.

Whether the music industry will evolve further as the internet becomes a bigger part in our lives, is only speculation, but with Simon Cowell signed acts such as One Direction still dominating the charts, it won't likely change any time soon.
