'Hard Out Here' by Lily Allen last night, she gave clues via twitter that her followers could type the answers to into her website in order to see snapshots of her video until it was released. This created a 'buzz' online before the song was even heard, and lead to #hoh and #LilyAllen trending on twitter, as well as almost 1million views on the YouTube video overnight.
The lyrics question the nature of the music industry and the way women are treated and represented in the media in general. 'You're not a size 6 and you're not good looking, you'd better be rich or real good at cooking' there are also references to popular hit 'Blurred Lines', mocking the video and singer Robin Thicke. As Lily's video is controversial, as well as the lyrics, the song has become very popular very quickly. The online marketing also helped promote the song and continues to do so, especially through twitter.
However the song is likely to gain backlash for the controversial content; I doubt the music industry will change due to the song but it has raised awareness to inequality in the media.
The band I am using for my music video 'Fierce Morgan' are in the genre of pop punk / ska, which stereotypically doesn't deal with these issues in the way pop music does. As the videos are generally all performance of the band, there is rarely controversy in this genre of music, therefore pop music news is unlikely to affect my video, or the videos of bands within the same genre.
